Case Study: Hybrid Solar Home, Hāwera, New Zealand

This residential home located in provincial Hawera New Zealand was facing challenges with unreliable and inconsistent power supply. Hāwera is the second-largest centre in the Taranaki region of New Zealand's North Island, with a population of 10,300.

To deal with this problem they were looking for a solar systems and battery solution that would solve their problem and provide regular and consistent power for their essential services.

The 6.03kWp roof mount array installed on a residential property in Hāwera, New Zealand consists of 1 x GoodWe Hybrid 5000VA 48V Inv/Chrgr and 4 x Pylontech Lithium Ion 2.4kWh (9.6kWh). The PV modules were roof mounted using industrial grade aluminium rails. The mounting was installed for Region D wind rating. The solar strings are taken off the roof to isolators and fed into the inverters via appropriately sized cables and protection devices.

All protection equipment, wiring and design practices are as per the AS/NZS 5033 and AS/NZS 4777.

This installed solar system was designed to generate 6.89MWh/year of solar energy and provide 8.64kWh (Usable) battery storage with grid support.

• The payback period for this type of grid tied system is approximately 6-8 years in this region of New Zealand.
• The payback also increases to a payback of 10-12 years with the purchase of battery backup solutions. The payback period is dependent on energy charges in each region of New Zealand. For instance, this payback period is quicker for the far east and northern New Zealand provincial regions.
